C-Bus, KNX, and Dynalite: A Guide to Sydney’s Commercial Lighting Control Systems

March 3, 2026

Walk into almost any commercial building in Sydney and the lighting control system behind the scenes will be one of three platforms: C-Bus, KNX, or Dynalite. They each take a different approach to solving the same problem — giving building managers reliable, programmable control over lighting and building services.

At Technified, we design, install, and program across all three. Here’s a quick overview of each platform and what makes it tick.

C-Bus

C-Bus was developed right here in Australia by Clipsal and is now part of the Schneider Electric family. It runs a dedicated protocol over Cat5 cable with cable runs up to 1,000 metres, and it’s been a staple of Australian buildings — both residential and commercial — for decades.

C-Bus has the largest installer base of any lighting control platform in the country. It’s well-understood across the electrical trade, and the free C-Bus Toolkit software makes commissioning accessible. You’ll find C-Bus controlling lighting, HVAC, and energy monitoring in everything from office buildings to schools and retail fitouts across Sydney.

KNX

KNX is an international open standard (ISO/IEC 14543) backed by over 400 manufacturers worldwide, including ABB, Siemens, and Schneider Electric. It runs over twisted pair, IP, or RF, and uses a universal commissioning tool called ETS.

KNX is designed as a full building automation backbone — lighting, HVAC, blinds, metering, and access control can all sit on the same bus. Its strength is bringing multiple building services into a single, coordinated system. KNX devices from different manufacturers all speak the same language, which gives specifiers flexibility when selecting hardware.

Dynalite

Dynalite was born in Sydney and is now part of Signify (formerly Philips Lighting). It runs the DyNet protocol over RS-485 with IP gateways and has been a cornerstone of commercial lighting control in Australia for decades, with over 35,000 projects worldwide.

Dynalite is particularly well-known for sophisticated scene management — making it a popular choice in hospitality, retail, and event spaces where lighting needs to shift throughout the day. It also integrates natively with DALI, BACnet, KNX, and DMX, which makes it an excellent coordination layer in buildings that run multiple protocols.

In Practice, Buildings Often Run More Than One

Commercial buildings aren’t always tidy. A building that started with Dynalite 15 years ago might have had a floor refitted with C-Bus, and a recent extension specified with KNX. We see this regularly across our commercial projects in Sydney — multiple platforms in the same building, sometimes on the same floor.

Modern fit-outs also layer protocols by design. DALI-2 at the fixture level, with C-Bus, KNX, or Dynalite sitting above as the control backbone. Each protocol doing what it does best.

Already Have One of These Systems?

This is the reality for most commercial buildings in Sydney. Your system was installed 10 or 15 years ago. The original programmer has moved on. Nobody documented it properly. And now you need changes — or it’s playing up and you can’t find anyone qualified to work on it.

The good news: these are robust systems. A well-installed C-Bus, KNX, or Dynalite system can run reliably for 15-20+ years. The challenge is finding an integrator who can diagnose, re-program, and maintain a system they didn’t originally install.

Before committing to a full replacement, it’s worth getting a system health check. Re-programming and updating an existing system is often more cost-effective than starting from scratch.

Why Technified Works Across All Three

Most lighting control integrators specialise in one platform, maybe two. We made a deliberate decision to build capability across C-Bus, KNX, Dynalite, DALI, Rapix, Zencontrol, and others.

Why? Because commercial buildings don’t come in a single flavour. A building manager shouldn’t have to hire three different integrators for three different floors. And when it’s time to specify a new project, the recommendation should be based on what the building needs — not what the integrator happens to know.

We hold Schneider Electric’s EcoXpert certification for commercial automation, and we’ve been designing, installing, and programming commercial lighting control systems in Sydney for over 25 years combined. Whether you’re planning a new fit-out, upgrading an existing system, or need ongoing maintenance across any of these platforms — we’re a single point of contact for it all.
